• Industry-Ready Performance: Proliferum B matched FBS-equivalent cell attachment on Nexture Bio's microcarriers in agitated suspension, enabling cultivated meat producers to eliminate animal components while maintaining production metrics.
• Cost-Effective Optimisation: 2X Proliferum B concentration enhanced cell distribution and viability across stress conditions, giving producers a clear protocol for maximising yield in 3D suspension environments.
• Strategic Formulation Selection: Proliferum B outperformed industry-standard ACF alternatives, offering reliable options to accelerate transition from R&D to economically viable production.
Nexture Bio, founded in December 2023, develops animal-component-free (ACF) microcarriers and scaffolds for use across the food and life science industries. The startup has a cell culture and research laboratory, as well as a pilot-scale Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) production facility in development. Nexture creates novel 3D materials that adherent cells need for growth— complementing Multus' media development as an enabling technology partner for the cultivated meat industry.
Nexture Bio is actively pursuing cost-effective, ACF alternatives to FBS that are highly compatible with their microcarriers. This effort will support the development of a validated ACF product pairing that meets the performance and regulatory demands of the cultivated meat industry, while advancing Nexture’s commitment to offering fully ACF solutions to their customers.
Microcarriers aid the growth of adherent cells in suspension to support scaling up cell culture for industrial applications. Growing adherent cells in 3D in suspension on microcarriers is challenging as shear forces can disrupt cell-surface interactions, and this challenge is intensified when using ACF alternatives. The industry needs effective ACF solutions that maintain viability and proliferation to optimise cell attachment on confluence on microcarriers to enable scale-up of cell culture in suspension.
Nexture Bio evaluated three Proliferum B formulations (PB01, 02, and 04) with their newly launched microcarrier product using C2C12 myoblasts, benchmarking against 10% FBS-DMEM and an ACF control media. They seeded cells at 1×10⁵ cells/mL with 5 mg/mL microcarriers, allowed 4-hour static attachment, then cultured for 3 days in suspension at 90-100 RPM. 2X Proliferum B provided strong attachment and viability, with PB01 and PB04 consistently generating cellular coverage equivalent to FBS controls.
"Proliferum B gives us an animal-free media that works just as well as FBS without the high price tag. Once we optimised to 2X concentration, it performed exceptionally well even in our challenging suspension environment—exactly what we need to advance this industry."

Proliferum B (10X) is a panel of four ACF formulations, allowing companies to determine which works best for their specific conditions. Multus developed these ready-to-use solutions using their AI-driven platform for optimal cell attachment in traditional and demanding environments.
Across four sequential experiments, Nexture Bio identified optimal conditions for Proliferum B with their microcarriers:
At 2X concentration, PB01 and PB04 demonstrated significantly improved performance:
• Cell Viability: Strong Calcein-AM fluorescence confirmed metabolically active cells with intact membranes, complemented by positive Hoechst nuclear staining
• Distribution: PB01 and PB04 at 2X achieved 70-80% microcarrier coverage comparable to FBS controls
• Morphology: 2X formulations promoted proper fibroblastic spreading versus the rounded appearance at 1X
• Competitive Edge: Consistently outperformed ACF control media in morphology maintenance under agitation
Nexture Bio plans to expand testing to include their fish and chicken cell lines using Proliferum B. The companies are developing optimised protocols for different cell types and microcarrier formulations, establishing recommended concentration ranges and seeding densities for each application.
By combining Nexture Bio's microcarriers with Multus' Proliferum B, cultivated meat producers gain a fully ACF pathway from 2D to scalable 3D suspension culture, addressing regulatory requirements while enabling efficient production scale-up.
Technical Note: Proliferum B formulations 1 and 4 at 2X concentration consistently delivered optimal performance in this demanding environment, likely due to their higher concentrations of key attachment factors.
